Same Sex Family Law

Although same-sex partners have come a long way in terms of legal rights and responsibilities with regard to families, they still face some unique issues under the law. J.E.A. Family Law can help same-sex couples recognize and address these issues before they become a problem. Of course, same-sex couples also have many of the same troubles as other couples so those matters may need to be dealt with too.

California recognized domestic partnerships starting in 2005. Then, in 2008, California law allowed same-sex couples to marry. Federal law has also since changed, making same-sex family law issues less complicated. However, for those who had a domestic partnership and then a marriage, California still requires that those couples divorce and file a termination of their Registered Domestic Partnership. This situation is further complicated by the fact that couples must still be residents of California to have their domestic partnership terminated.

J.E.A. Family Law can help you work through all of these potentially complicated issues, and more. Contact us to set up an appointment with our experienced and professional team.
